On Wednesday, August 28th, 2024, we were so excited to host the 14th annual Health Equity & Social Justice (HESJ) Conference in McGowan South at DePaul University. The conference was hosted by DePaul University’s Master of Public Health Program and the Center for Community Health Equity.

It was a day filled with learning from one another with a poster session of research projects and community partner displays surrounding public health topics throughout Chicago as well as presentations from a community-based panel.

Keynote Speakers

Melissa Maguire, LSW

Executive Director of the Illinois Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (IAFCC)

Melissa is grateful to be the Executive Director of the Illinois Association of Free and Charitable
Clinics (IAFCC), working to strengthen the Illinois safety net to maximize the collective impact of
free and charitable clinics by representing and resourcing them to ensure equitable, accessible and quality health care for all.

As a social worker for 40 years, she has also worked in organizations
serving those that are experiencing addiction and homelessness.

Fatema Mirza, MBA

Executive Director of the Be Well Clinic

Results-oriented executive with a strong
focus on community and population
health, possessing extensive expertise in business models, strategic planning, project management, and grant administration. Skilled in program design, community needs assessment, risk analysis, team building, and volunteer workforce development. Career achievements include providing expert consultations on community engagement strategies for Health Equity and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research, establishing impactful community health programs serving immigrant communities in Chicago, leading Affordable Care Act enrollments, setting up & managing home health agencies, coordinating healthcare IT projects in hospital settings and experimental research in a basic sciences environment. She currently serves on several non-profit boards and is a cofounder of non-profit, Worry Free Community.

Kamari Thompson

Director of Programs at Mobile Care Chicago

Kamari Thompson is currently the Director of Programs at Mobile Care Chicago. As a native Chicagoan and growing up on Chicago’s South Side, Kamari has always had a strong community connection. It was that connection along with her environment that sparked her interest in the health field. Ms. Thompson has been a lifelong champion for health equity and has served as an advocate for Asthma and Allergy patients for over a decade. Prior to her work in asthma Kamari worked as a Clinical Health Education Specialist. Her work has always been centered on the needs of the community, particularly minority, low income and underserved communities. In such a role she has worn many hats, and though the needs of the community may shift with each generation her goal remains the same: to empower people of all age’s races and economic backgrounds to take a proactive role in their health.

Stephanie D. Willding, MPA

Chief Executive Officer of CommunityHealth

Steph Willding is the Chief Executive Officer of CommunityHealth, the nation’s
largest volunteer-based, free health center that provides critical health care
access to uninsured patients. Steph has committed her career to rebuilding
health care systems to increase access to care, deepen service availability, and
improve health outcomes. Steph is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Illinois Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (IAFCC). She is also proud to serve as a Board Member for Planned Parenthood of Illinois Action and as an Executive Advisory Board Member for the UIC School of Public Health. She holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2022, Steph was named Crain’s Business Chicago Top 40 Under 40. She is a member of the Leadership Greater Chicago Class of 2025.
